Keep Phoenix Beautiful Receives $10,000 Grant Award
as part of Nationwide Competition to â€œThink Greenâ€
Phoenix, Arizona â€“ Keep Phoenix Beautiful announces that it has received a $10,000 cash grant from national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful, Inc. as part of a nationwide effort sponsored by Waste Management, Inc. that encourages local solutions to improving community environments.
In the competition, more than 575 local affiliates of Keep America Beautiful were challenged to present proposals for ambitious projects representing a wide array of stewardship, community outreach and educational projects. Keep Phoenix Beautiful is one 15 winners nationwide, chosen from a field of 61 entries in the 2008 program.
The winning proposal includes funding the development of a new web site, http://www.phoenixrecycles.org to assist businesses, condo owners and apartment building tenants locate drop off locations for recycling across the city of Phoenix. Funding will also be used to support Earth Day Phoenix on April 22, 2009 at Cesar Chavez Plaza across from Phoenix City Hall. This event will promote recycling to the business community offering solutions by many Phoenix based companies that the business community may not be aware of. Booths are available to qualifying companies free of charge.

â€œThe Think Green grants provide us with a great avenue to demonstrate how Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful think green everyday,â€ said Barry Caldwell, senior vice president of public affairs and communications and chairman of the KAB board. â€œAfter all, supporting communities - making them cleaner safer and helping improve their quality of life - is what our company â€“ and KAB â€“ is all about. Each of the affiliates has a project that will make its community cleaner and more beautiful.â€
The wide range of winning programs reflect the diverse interests and needs of the communities involved, and include programs to tackle illegal dumping, hands-on environmental education, media that convey the importance of stewardship to the public including videos and booklets, tree re-planting and recycling events. Support of these initiatives marks Waste Managementâ€™s continuing commitment to local community quality of life and to also building awareness about sustainable resources for effective management of waste.
Waste Management also partners with KAB on different programs, which include additional community beautification grants and as a National Sponsor for Keep America Beautifulâ€™s Great American Cleanupâ„¢, the nationâ€™s largest community improvement program.
